Why Skip-It is the Workout Challenge you Need Right Now!

For any of you readers that remember the glory of toys in the 90's, you undoubtedly remember the awesome Skip-It. If you missed this wonder of play-based innovation, picture a spinning wheel (or ball) attached to a ring around your ankle. It's simple; the wheel rotates as long as you keep the momentum going. After watching my daughter struggle to figure it out and get into a rhythm, she hit 100 skips. I was feeling a bit of FOMO because it looked super fun. After she hit over 200, I was feeling competitive. I won't lie to you. After a couple of minutes using this thing, I was feeling like Danny Glover in Lethal Weapon "I'm getting too old for this shit!" I ended up barely beating her record at 206 only for her to absolutely demolish it at 511. Then, the challenge really started. I told one of my clients about the competition and then their 7 year-old son proceeded to jump for what seemed like an eternity and set a new gym record of 959. I then did a little Googling and found-out that the current world record stands at 2,054 skips and was completed in 30:22 by 7 year-old superstar Lisa Bailey. After watching Vivi and her friends playing with the skip-it, I realized they were actually training a bunch of qualities at once:

  • Endurance

  • Coordination

  • Footwork

  • Focus

  • Plyometrics

That got me thinking, "What if we had our own challenge and included the parents?" I started thinking about a fun way to get everyone involved and chase Skip-it glory.

The challenge is simple:

  1. Get as many skips as you can. Only recorded videos count as an official entry, no screenshots. Let's keep everyone honest.

  2. In-person attempts at our gym also count.

  3. Video entries can be submitted via: YouTube video link, 6019668078 on Whatsapp or strengthwithapurpose@gmail.com Google Drive share.

  4. No purchase necessary.

  5. This challenge is ongoing and has no deadline. New world records will be recognized and awarded.

  6. Questions/comments/concerns please email me at: strengthwithapurpose@gmail.com

Quick note about the divisions: I pulled them from the Kids World Records official website. While this is technically a kids' toy, I see no reason why adults can't participate!

The official categories are as follows:

  • Girls 4-6: No record currently

  • Girls 7-9: Current record is 2,054

  • Girls 10-12: Current record is 1,154

  • Boys 4-6: Current record is 79

  • Boys 7-9: No record currently

  • Boys 10-12: No record currently

  • Moms: No record currently

  • Dads: No record currently

  • Grandmas: No record currently

  • Grandpas: No record currently

A few quick tips:

  • Pace yourself and NEVER push so hard you feel like you're going to pass-out, faint or get hurt.

  • Wear two socks on each foot for extra padding as the friction from the ring can cause blisters.

  • Set a baseline then slowly ramp-up to your personal goal.

  • Make sure you're outside with plenty of space on a flat surface.

Okay. Your mission, should you choose to accept it is to break the current record in your division. Here's the good news; there are a TON of divisions with no current record, so let's get to it!
